When I go into a group setting to meet with CEO’s, leaders, managers and team members within an organization for a strategic planning session, one of the first things we have to address is the vision. That’s because the vision really drives the organization. Putting a group of any size together to discuss strategic direction rarely finds everyone initially on the same page. Thus, building a foundation around the vision allows us to shape the various components that can get the company from point A to point B. Why? Because everything that happens afterward is shaped around the vision of the organization. So let’s talk about why the vision is so powerful.
- The vision serves as the driver of the organization. It sets the tone and direction of where the organization or business is headed. The work of a business can begin to feel mundane, but a compelling vision fosters meaning. This is what our future looks like, where we see ourselves down the road, the problems we solve and the people we serve. That will get you into action.
- The vision serves as a catalyst that propels the work and the purpose of an organization. Once you understand your vision —- where you’re heading —- you can then revisit, revise, and/or update your mission.
- A vision doesn’t just happen, it’s inspired. I love visioning sessions where the bodies that be come together to frame their ideas of what the company looks like in the future. Creative thinking coupled with strategic thinking (often stifled in the day-to-day work environment) allow for bigger, broader and even bolder aspirations.
- The vision galvanizes individuals and teams into action. Not only is the vision inspired, it also inspires the leaders, the managers, and the team to work collectively and collaboratively towards a common objective building momentum and prompting action.

- The vision helps define key milestones and goals. Working your way down from an inspired vision is a lot easier than working your way up to nothing. In order to get where you want to go, you have to see where you want to be, then define key markers and specific goals and objectives to move forward.
