The Power of Purpose in Business

There is power in purpose.

When you have a keen sense of why you’re here and what you’re supposed to be doing, it gives you the tools you need to head off controversy and distractions and to move forward with strong commitment and conviction. This is especially true when it comes to running a business.

Purpose is about impact.  It serves as a driver, a motivator, a fighter, and a rebel. It wakes you up in the morning and keeps you up at night. It pushes and nudges you and challenges you from day to day. With it you are destined to effect those around you — it’s inevitable.

Your purpose is your mission.

The thing about purpose is it doesn’t usually come packaged all pretty and easy. Just ask anyone that’s doing something they know they were born to do. Purpose often involves sacrifice. It may come with long hours, uncertainty, and frustration, yet when it’s uncovered and/or discovered it provides a sense of clarity and determination that can yield great rewards. This is especially true for new business owners.

Maximizing your purpose may be the most underutilized resource business owners have at their disposal. Purpose motivates teams, fuels desires and makes bad days worthwhile. A business with purpose is a force to be reckoned with.

Here’s how to use it to benefit your business:

  1. Develop and define your mission and make sure everyone in your company knows what that is.
  2. Be led by the mission, not the money.
  3. Build your team around your cause. Look for those that understand the vision and the mission and are willing to work to help you get there.
