Your personal values have a lot to do with how you conduct your business and they play an important role in your work. The culture of a company always starts from the top and your company values serve as the foundation for your business. But before you define your business principles, you need to make sure you are clear on your own personal and professional values.
In our program, the entrepreneur prep academy we focus on both personal and business development because we believe both are important for your success. When it comes to clarity of purpose, understanding who you are at the core, e.g. your mission and values, will take you a long way in terms of effectiveness and sustainability.
Your core values and guiding principles help you determine how you go about doing your work.
Here are some examples of some personal life values:
- Security/Safety
- Knowledge
- Leisure
- Love
- Trust/Honesty
- Health
- Spirituality
Here are some examples of some business values.
- Accomplishment/Recognition
- Helping People
- Working Alone
- Creativity
- Solving Problems
- Making Decisions
- Power/Authority
When you look at this list, what values do you find important? If you were to rank them, what would be your top 3 personal and professional values?
When you understand what your personal and professional values are then it helps you in all of your interactions including the decisions you make.
An example might be working collaboratively in terms of an alliance or partnership. There are times when businesses or individuals attempt to form business relationships and find that it is super challenging. Sometimes in these instances, it comes down to individual core values. You may find that these relationships don’t work in the long run. Therefore, it’s important to understand what you value in your business and what you value personally. Once you are clear on those things you can then look at your business and understand how those things work together.
Make sure you join us for Part II of the values series when I’ll discuss creating a strong value position in your company by defining those core values and guiding principles.
